As a sculptor inspired by the natural formation of sedimentary rock, I have developed a
practice in which I carve sculptures out of layers of bluestone and slate. Working
intimately with these stone layers, I have had the opportunity to see the beauty that
each individual layer holds. The natural texture and color of the stone in combination
with my chiseling and carving gives a unique surface and shape to each of the layers.
When I finish a sculpture the layers are stacked to make a whole, and while the finished
piece possesses allure and austerity of its own, some of the beauty of the individual
layers remains hidden, locked within the finished sculpture.
After many years of wanting to share the beauty of these layers with others, I have
finally found the right medium in which to do so, and created a series of archival
pigment prints. The artistry of the layers lends itself well to this medium, which is
able to capture the texture and unique variation in color and shape of each individual layer.
Printed on paper, the layers take on a new life. They become unique works of art that
stand on their own.
